Male Baby Changing Area

This photo was taken in one of the male public toilet which provides a facility for male parents who are with their babies to change their nappies. It is a living witness for a change in the culture and acceptance for male parents to nurse their babies in public facilities.

Wow, so the macho image and men's obsession with it are showing signs of cracks. That is good.

I admire men I see in shopping malls who are carrying their babies, without their wives in tow. One time, I saw a man in SM who was carrying what appeared to be less- than-five-months-old baby. He was not in anyone else's company. I guessed the baby's age from the way the man carried him/her. I approached the man and said, "Brother, you have a very blessed wife. Keep doing that. I admire you." The man looked at me like I was a moron. You see, he did not even know me and I did not know him. I just found the sight very compelling.

I always tell my friends this and they always rib me for my "thick face (kapalmuks)." But hey, I would do that over again.

chyt,

when I left the Philippines more than 7 yrs ago, I want to believe that we were more advance in "cracking" the macho image. But for more than 7 yrs of stay here, I thought otherwise, I see more Briton male parents with thier babies inside the pram or carried infront or back (the aba system we Igorots do). They do this in public places with pride.

I believe that nurturing the young is a shared responsibility of both men and women whether in public or in private.

i think this is one of the issues that was overlooked everytime we celebrate the Christmas season. We tend to forget the role of Joseph the patron father of the Child Jesus. His sacrifices in keeping his family safe even from sure danger of being killed. It is about high time to acknowledge his vital role in the nativity story.

His fathering role is worth admiring too.
